Production Process
These two projects had very different production processes that involved a creative way of thinking for each. I had to think about form following function for both of these projects and how I could execute my idea in a reasonable way. The found footage film was created first. My creative process involves me thinking of the essential ideas I want to convey through the film. I knew I wanted to make something that contrasts Brazilian music as it has a surreal nature to it. Surrealism had a revitalization during the psychedelic movement and during those times a lot of media was influenced by psychedelic styles. We see these styles carry over into the new age through electronic music. Getting these clips was not too difficult because Youtube had plenty of ads from the '70s uploaded. Back to when form follows function, with today's technology I was easily able to download the video. I created a library of videos and began my editing process. After effects is a program I use a lot when it comes to video editing. I had no problem putting the clips together as it reminded me of music videos I have done in the past.
The process for my Metaphor of self video was very similar besides the idea and gathering of clips. For this film, I had to use my videography skill to capture clips of my friend. The film had a cinematic look in my head, I wanted to capture that as best as I can. This was shot over a day and we did location scouting as we shot. The film came out like how I planned in my mind and this makes me want to create more videos just like it.
The processes differed in some ways but it was important to help build skills to add to your toolbox. Found footage film project helped us create an understanding of how to manipulate media to create something new. It involved a research process and had us dive into archives and sources to find clips that would work best for our video. The second film allowed us to capture our own images, allowing us to create our own narrative about ourselves. As an artist having a vague prompt like "metaphor of self" helps spark off ideas in my head and this way of working is very intriguing to me.
